I opened the Chronicle this morning and got two messages from Governor Good-Hair and his GOP team in Austin. First, their plan for dealing with the financial mess they created with their “no new taxes” answer to every question consists of cutting teacher salaries, crowding school rooms, pretending that population growth will not result in more kids to educate, and depriving poor and disabled people of any decent level of medical care.
That was the first bit of news.
The second was the governor’s big plan for an August prayer meeting in Reliant Stadium. Yeah, right! That should take care of everything.
It reminds me of an old Wobbly song:
Long haired preachers come out every night,
And they tell ya what’s wrong and what’s right.
When you ask them for something to eat,
They reply, in their voices so sweet:
You will eat bye and bye
In that beautiful place in the sky.
Watch and pray.
Live on hay.
There’ll be pie in the sky when you die.
(That’s a lie!)
